Delmore Schwartz was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He received his primary and secondary education in the public schools of Pittsburgh and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1930. His first job was as a typesetter for a newspaper in Pittsburgh, and he soon became interested in writing poetry. In 1935 he became a staff reporter and columnist for The Pittsburgh Courier and also worked for The New Republic magazine. His works, which include poetry, stories, plays, essays, and magazine articles, have appeared in Harper's Magazine and other publications. He has been a frequent contributor to The New Yorker magazine.
